All tied up after Chiles to Glover bomb
Woah! 11 plays and 75 yards and a TD for the Spartans is a good way to respond to a turnover. Jaron Glover got loose behind the defense on a 2nd and 23 and snagged a 34-yard touchdown from Chiles. 14 all now, 10:07 to play in the half.
Terps score quick after INT
That didn't take long. Two plays and 17 yards after the interception return, Billy Edwards ran for a score. MSU now back down 7, 14-7.
Defense forces a stop, Chiles throws a pick
Year one of the Jonathan Smith era is proving to be a ton of ups and downs. The defense followed up getting gashed by a quick stop, and the offense followed up a score with a turnover. Chiles in particular is someone who may be hot and cold all year, as he gains experience.
MSU responds with impressive scoring drive
The best offensive series off the year so far leads off game two. Aidan Chiles threw four completions, including a touchdown strike to Montorie Foster Jr. Freshman receiver Nick Marsh caught a first down pass, and Nate Carter got loose for 36 yards on two carries. 7-7 score now as we move towards the end of the first quarter. Maryland strikes first on opening 75-yard touchdown drive
That was probably not how the Spartans drew up starting Big Ten play. A 14 play scoring drive by Maryland saw the Terps moving the ball in all sorts of ways. The secondary will be put to work today, with Maryland firing the ball all over the field through the air. Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards was 6/8 on the drive.
Kickoff
Michigan State will start on defense. Here we go! After defeating Florida Atlantic in the season opener last weekend, Michigan State travels to Maryland to open Big Ten play. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
The Spartans had their share of offensive struggles in Week 1, with three turnovers and 16 points in the win over FAU. Quarterback Aidan Chiles and the Spartans will look to raise their level in Week 2.
Defensively, Michigan State caused two turnovers, allowed 10 points, and even scored two points with a safety. After last season's defense largely put up little resistance, it was a welcome sign for MSU faithful.
Maryland kicked off its season with a 50-7 win over UConn. Maryland head coach Mike Locksley is in his sixth season and the Terps are coming off an 8-5 campaign. Locksley holds a 2-2 record against Michigan State, including a 31-9 win in East Lansing last year.
